KVAH Business/Public Administration Internship

Position Description/Duties

The Business/Public Administration/Accounting Intern works with the administration, operations and financial aspects of Kaw Valley Arts and Humanities, Inc. (KVAH).  The following are areas in which the intern will have responsibilities:

  1. Financial data input into QuickBooks accounting software.
  2. Input/upkeep/maintenance of Vendor/Customer/Donor contact information and financial data.
  3. Reconciliation of banking and employee accounts.
  4. Federal and State tax withholding reporting
  5. Unemployment reporting and form preparation
  6. Record keeping for insurance policies
  7. Appropriate filing for accounting and operations aspects of agency
  8. Establishment/update/maintenance of donor distribution lists for development marketing
  9. Establishment/update/maintenance of volunteer distribution lists for development of volunteer base and scheduling of volunteers.
  10. On-going and year end acknowledgement of foundation, government, corporate and individual gifts and grants.  Record-keeping related to gifts and grants.
  11. Attends meetings of the Kansas City, KS Downtown Shareholders, meetings with program collaborators, weekly KVAH staff meetings and regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with the KVAH Executive Director
  12. Attends trainings and professional development at the annual KC Philanthropy Conference, Kansas Arts Commission trainings (e.g. Websites on a Dime, Marketing for Arts Organizations, and other professional development/training)
  13. Assists with development of marketing materials for the KVAH Academic Internship program
  14. Participates in staff reading assignments/discussions in leadership and skill building
  15. Assists the Executive Director with maintaining selected gallery hours
  16. Other duties as assigned.

 

All Interns will:

  1. Assist with activities and events that require the attention of all KVAH employees, volunteers and interns in order to facilitate a successful event or project.  Two examples of these activities are: 1) preparing for Artwalk exhibits, especially on the day of the exhibits, 2) attending and participating in the Annual Shine and Dine Competition for grant money in which employees, volunteers and board members plan a presentation about KVAH
  2. Assist with any other activities that may be of importance to the well-being and growth of KVAH.

Qualifications Needed

Minimum of college level student with working (at least intermediate) level knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software.  Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Should know how to do mail merges and data entry. Accounting or business major is not necessary as long as the intern has the above skills.  This internship is an excellent opportunity for a student who plans to work in a non-profit or for-profit business or accounting field, or manage an arts organization.

Remuneration

All KVAH internships are for academic credit only. Interns are reimbursed for travel outside of the Kansas City metropolitan area, as well as workshop registration fees when workshop or meeting attendance is required by Executive Director.  Traditionally interns work for 96-120 on-site hours for 3 hours of academic credit or as required by student’s academic institution. Appointments/internships must be arranged/approved with Executive Director and academic institution prior to start of internship.
